Coconut coir is a natural material made out of coconut husks. The coconut husks are washed to remove salt and then sun dried; dried coir is compressed in the form of bricks. Coco coir is a 100% natural growing medium. Each brick weighs 650 grams or 1.8 pounds. By adding water to the brick, each brick will yield about a quarter of a cubic foot or about 8 quarts. These compressed bricks are individually wrapped for easy storage. Because of its superior water holding capacity, excellent air space and drainage, coir is a useful soil amendment for potted plants, containers and gardens. Coir is a sustainable alternative to peat moss – it does not produce the same environmental damage caused by peat mining. In addition, coir is easier to hydrate and lasts longer in soil than peat moss.

This “washed” coco reads 460 PPM (salty!) 460 PPM and pH 6.3The label says “low electrical conductivity and low salt levels,” but I measured 460 PPM. (Premium bagged coco reads 0 PPM, which means it has been washed well enough so there is no residual salt). You better wash this if you plan to put plants in it, which means spending half an hour running water through it with it in a pillowcase in the bathtub–a messy, unpleasant job. This was $9 a brick and makes about .2 cubic feet. For three times the…
